Quick Tip: Reinforcement Helps Build Memory

Do not be surprised to find that your child can easily remember to pack everything he needs to play a video game at a friend’s house but still has to be reminded which drawer is for socks. After all, he receives a lot of reinforcement for getting all his video game stuff to his friend’s house (and reinforcement that is highly meaningful and valuable to him), but for putting away his socks? Not so much. So rig things your way. Try offering vastly richer forms of reinforcement for a task and see how it goes before putting into place an elaborate picture or labeling system, especially for a task that should be easily incorporated into the day’s activities.
